2008 Chapter Events

Hawkeye Chapter Training and Fun Day, July 27, 2008: We welcomed three new members to our chapter since last meeting. Gary Singleton from Palmyra,Mo, Brandon Mitchell from Marshalltown, Ia and Brett Johnson from Ames, Ia.

We had a great turn out for training and everyone that attended was involved in the training elements. The picnic was fun with great food and we had a great raffle thanks to Mike!!! We raised about $185.

Not everyone stayed to shoot five stand and trap but those whom did got some pratice in. We had a chance to watch a young person with hopes of Olympic dreams do some shooting!!!!

If our chapter members see the Brownell people and Kelly, please thank them again for their continued support; both for the grounds they let us use and the financial backing through generous donations.

Hope to see everyone whom attended and more at our Aug. 10th meeting. This meeting will be the mock test before the fall test. So even if some do not have a dog entered, come out and help and get an idea of what is going on at the tests. This is a chance to see not only NA dogs but UPT and UT dogs testing.

A mock test was held on Sunday, April 20, 2008. This was for Natural Ability only. We had a good turn out and are looking forward to the actual tests in May.

The spring Natural Ability Test was held May 17 and 18. Nineteen dogs ran in the NA test. Saturday's results gave out 3 Prize I's, 4 Prize II's, 1 Prize III and 2 no prize. Sunday's results gave out 2 Prize I's, 3 Prize II's and 4 Prize III's. Welcome new members Ron Greeson, Gregg Polzin and Jim & Lisa Umphrey! Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and efforts; especially the judges, Joe, Julie and Travis. Check out the Treasurer's Report and pictures.

Fall 2008 Test

The Iowa Hawkeye NAVHDA Chapter will host a 3 day Natural Ability, Utility Prep and Utility Tests on August 22, 23 and 24, 2008. All handlers and their dogs are to be ready by 7:00 a.m. sharp.

All members are encouraged to attend to help make this test run as smooth as possible. Contact Test Secretary, Joe Furrow, at 641-474-2237. There is a bed and breakfast close to the grounds and the no host dinner will also be held there (Linden House, 202 East St, Lynnville, Iowa 641-527-2332). The Guest House Bed & Breakfast, 3970 50th St, Grinnell (641-236-5843) is another option. Grinnell is just 10 miles to the north and there are many motels at the interchange. More information on this test will be forthcoming. A current test form is available for you to download and print on this site. Look forward to seeing you in the fall.

2008 TRAINING INFORMATION

Training Information for Iowa Hawkeye Chapter

Bring your own birds for field or water training or contact Joe Furrow at 641-474-2237 at least a week in advance to reserve birds. You will be required to pay for the birds you ordered when received.

Each scheduled training day will be held at "BIG SPRINGS SHOOTING COMPLEX" in Searsboro, Iowa. This wonderful complex is managed by Brownells of Montezuma, Iowa. Brownells is the World's Largest Supplier of Firearms, Acessories, and Gunsmithing Tools. Kelly Bryan is the manager of Big Springs and is also an employee of Brownells. His phone number at the complex is 641-527-2377. Big Springs Shooting Complex physical address is 4921 Highway 146 in Searsboro, Iowa. The easiest way to the complex is to go South of Grinnell, Iowa on Hwy 146. It is just about 10 miles to the small village of Searsboro. At the Y intersection, take a left or go back east about 1/2 mile to the barn at the top of the hill. This is our normal training site for field work. This barn is on the south side of the road. The gun club is farther east another 1/2 mile to 3/4 mile on the north side of the road. Eventually, the Iowa Hawkeye NAVHDA Chapter will fix up an area in the building on the grounds to accomodate the club meetings and to host larger groups of people for future Handlers Clinics. If you are coming from the Iowa City area, take I-80 to Exit 197 which is the V-18 highway. Go south to Hwy 85 and head west to the town of Montezuma. Continue straight through town and head west on Main Street with turns into Diamond Trail Road. Past the two lakes and 7 miles down the road you come to a T intersection. Take a right onto Hwy 146 and the gun club is just down the road on your right. The test barn is another 1/2 mile down the road on your left. See you there. Drive safe. Bring lots of water to keep your dogs hydrated, especially in the field.
